Overview

Explore the Enchanting Trails of Kodachadri: A Trekker's Paradise

Nestled in the breathtaking Western Ghats within Shimoga district, Kodachadri stands tall as the tenth-highest peak in Karnataka. This picturesque destination captivates trekkers with its lush green jungle trails, dense tropical forests, and stunning landscapes. As part of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, Kodachadri serves as a backdrop to the revered Moola Mookambika Temple, believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Mookambika. What sets this peak apart is the mesmerizing sunset over the Arabian Sea, a unique blend of mountains and ocean rarely found elsewhere in the country. Prepare to be spellbound by the allure of Kodachadri, leaving you craving for more.

There are three primary trails to the peak, each offering a distinct experience. The most popular and challenging route begins at either Sampekatte or Marakuttaka, leading you through the awe-inspiring Hidlumane Falls. This steep and rugged trail demands navigating thick forests, gentle streams, and even scaling a waterfall—an exhilarating feat, especially during the monsoon season. Despite the arduous journey, reaching the summit will leave you in awe, surrounded by untouched forests, magical vistas, and rewarding climbs at every turn.

For those seeking a relatively easier path, consider the trail from Karakatte via Santhosh Hotel, Valur (Trek Route 2). Private vehicles can reach the small settlement near the hotel, making it an ideal starting point for a 4-5 hour trek to the peak.

The third trail, suitable for descent, follows a jeep route and is the longest of the three. You will embark on this route when returning from Kodachadri. All three trails converge at the Moola Mookambika temple, which also houses a PWD guest house—an essential landmark on your way to the peak. From here, it is a short 2-kilometer hike to the summit.

Prepare to embark on an unforgettable adventure as you explore the captivating trails of Kodachadri. Immerse yourself in the beauty of untouched nature, challenge yourself with exhilarating climbs, and experience the serenity of this trekker's paradise.

  1. Discover a Charming Homestay and Thrilling Milestones on Your Kodachadri Trek

During your Kodachadri trek, indulge in the warmth of a cozy homestay near Sampekatte, just a short drive from the starting point. This homestay provides an unparalleled home-like experience, complete with strictly authentic local vegetarian cuisine that delights the senses. The friendly elderly couple who run the place ensure that all your needs are taken care of, adding an extra touch of hospitality.

After a refreshing freshen-up and a fulfilling breakfast, gear up for a day filled with adventure. The trail comprises five significant milestones to keep an eye out for. The first milestone surprises you with an open meadow amidst the dense forest trails. As you pass numerous paddy fields, the trail eventually leads you to a house that holds a small surprise for weary trekkers. Brace yourself, as the challenging part of the trek begins here.

The second milestone brings you to the much-anticipated Hidlumane Falls, a series of seven waterfalls. Conquering each of these falls becomes its own thrilling adventure. Your efforts are rewarded with breathtaking views of the main waterfall cascading from a height of approximately 60 feet. Refresh yourself under the pristine water, and don't forget to refill your water bottles for the trek ahead.

Embark on an almost vertical climb from Kodachadri Falls, navigating tree roots and slippery rocks, until you reach steeper meadows. This marks the third milestone, offering a perfect spot to rest and savor a well-deserved lunch.

Further along the trail, it diverges and merges before joining the jeep trail that leads to the Kodachadri Temple, marking the fourth milestone. Here, you'll board a jeep for your descent.

From this point, a rocky trail along a cliff's edge leads you to the fifth and final milestone: the Kodachadri peak itself. At the peak, you'll find the Sarvajna Peetha, a small temple-like structure believed to be the meditation spot of Adi Sankaracharya, an 8th-century philosopher and theologian. The grand vistas and the enchanting sunset over the Arabian Sea, painting the evening sky with a myriad of hues, make all your efforts worthwhile. The sense of accomplishment you experience here surpasses any corporate target or performance bonus.
